find auth code?

hi there,
     i'm trying to find the auth. code of an rfid card, but i'm stuck, i
don't know what i need to have or know. can somebody help me please! i'm
still a new with the rfid technology but i really want to learn and
understand how i can do this.
   i heard browsing the web that there are out there people able to clone
smart cards, how can this been done without knowing the auth code of the
reader. it's been a while  i am working on this little project  but it seems
harder then i thought .

   i just want to make clear that i don't have any illegal/criminal activity
going on my mind just a thirst of curiosity and will of knowing. i just want
to deeply understand how this works. if you know some links of faqs or wikis
don't hesitate to post them i'll be happy to read them.
