The serial cable is only needed as an debug terminal - basically to
provide an ascii terminal where one can easily send an receive text
messages.
It is used in several firmware appiances of openpcd - for example inside
the reqa firmware to modify modulation pattern etc.
De-Bricking or changing DFU is always possible with a passive mini USB
cable by using the jumper approach.
It also simpler to start new firmwar from scratch when one has a serial
terminal - bacause you don't need the follblown USB stack running.

I guess everything is fine - I'm just very busy currently - in three
weeks there is tha Chaous Communication Camp in Berlin - a big Hacker
event. We will present OpenPICC and OpenPCD there - and OpenBeacon with
a huge tracking installation. Please allow me a response lag up to a week.
