The most simple solution is to buy a fixed 5V linear voltage regulator
with through-hole case (TO-220 case , pretty cheap <<1$ - for an
instance LM7805) and solder it together with two capacitors like
indicated in the data sheet to a breadboard.
This allows you to use voltages in the 7-10V range - for example 8.4V
rechargeable battery packs. Alternatively you can use a better linear
regulator with a much lower minimal voltage drop and use 7,2V battery
packs which are more common.
A much better solution would be to buy a simple Any-To-5V DC/DC
converter module (SIP through-hole like 78ST105VC-ND at digikey.com etc.) -
this won't waste power on the linear regulator.
Warmest regards,
Milosch
