RFID via RS232

Hi all,

A friend and I want to participate in Jugend forscht 2009 with a heavy
RFID-based project.
We were searching for RFID readers, and OpenPCD seems for us quite good, yet
we have two questions to it:
a) can we use it to simply dump the string of data recieved by a tag via
RS232?
b) is there any method to strip the costs - 120€ is pretty much :(
