Trying to get OpenPCD working

Hello.
I bought an OpenPCD v0.4 some time ago and so far have not been able to
get it to work as expected. In fact it looks as if it is not working at
all. Here is what I did:
After connecting the USB cable the red LED lit constantly.
Neither dmesg nor lsusb show the device present. No green light.
I tried to:
* load and unload the usbserial module, with and without options
* reset the device with jumper on pins 3 and 4 of SAM-BA
I then tried to upload new firmware with DFU:
=> pressing and holding Bootloader Button resulted in no light at all
and dfu-programmer says: no device present.
* I then followed the instructions on flashing with SAM-BA from
http://wiki.openpcd.org/wiki/Firmware#Flashing_a_complete_flash_image_.28using_SAM-BA.29
=> No device visible with lsusb. Since plugging the device with jumper
on pins 1 and 2 of SAM-BA I have not seen any sign of life. Also no red
light anymore. :-(
To me the device seems broken. Are there any chances to get it working?
Any ideas what to try next? Does it make sense to get a debug cable? Or
should I try to exchange it and get another one?
Thanks in advance for any answer or help.
